It actually commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, in which the Mexican Army successfully defended itself against the French. But activists in the 1950s publicized the day to educate Mexican Americans about their cultural heritage, and eventually it became an excuse to indulge in copious amounts of Mexican food and drink. You can probably thank beer corporations for that.
